The scientific community calls it “pseudoscience.” Proponents say it is the best explanation for the creation of the universe. Does this religious-based idea have a place in public education? No said Tammy Kitzmiller and other parents of children in Dover, Pennsylvania.

The Dover Area School District required the teaching of intelligent design to ninth grade students. The court ordered the district to stop reasoning that the policy violated Establishment Clause of the First Amendment to the United States Constitution.

Stephen G. Harvey is a Philadelphia attorney who, along with others, represented Kitzmiller and others. Harvey will discuss the case, Kitzmiller v. Dover Area School District, 400 F.Supp.2d 707 (D. Penn. 2005), and the controversy of teaching intelligent design in public schools.
