Professor Davis received his law degree from the University of Denver
College of Law in 1970 and his LL.M. from Yale Law School in 1980. He
received an Archibald Bush Foundation Leadership Fellowship in 1979-80. In
the summers of 1982 and 1984, he studied in Bonn and West Berlin under the
auspices of the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst.
Before joining the UND law faculty in 1971, Davis served in U.S. Army
Intelligence and later in the private practice of law in Colorado. He was
named Associate Dean of the School of Law in 1981, Interim Dean in 1982, and
Dean in 1983. During his tenure as Dean of the law school, Davis founded the
UND-University of Oslo law student exchange program, helped create the Upper
Great Plains Indian Law Center, and was a member of the UND Conflict
Resolution Center. He also served for eight years as UND¹s General Counsel.
In 2003, Davis became the Dean, then Vice President, of the Appalachian
School of Law in Grundy, Virginia. Upon his retirement from ASL in 2007, he
returned to UND as Visiting Professor, and is presently teaching the
first-year Contracts course. Also in 2007, UND bestowed the honorary title
of Dean Emeritus on Davis.
Dean Davis serves as a Commissioner on the North Dakota Commission on Legal
Counsel for Indigents and on the Board of the North Dakota Museum of Art.
