Types of ResumesThere are several types of resume styles that can be used effectively by job seekers. Each has its own merits and is favored in certain situations. No one style of resume will please every employer. Therefore, you must spend some time reviewing the position for which you are applying to see which type is best for you in that situation. The chronological resume is the most widely used and accepted format. It is structured by dates of employment and education in reverse chronological order. This type of resume is most effective if your work history or educational experience relates to the job for which you're applying. The functional style allows you to emphasize your strengths by skill category. It also provides flexibility in presenting skills gained through experience. This would be the best format to use if your skills are your best qualification for the position. Perhaps the best type of resume for a law student or graduate seeking initial employment in the legal field is the targeted resume. This resume is designed for a specific job or field. You would always include a career objective when sending an unsolicited resume to a firm or organization and focus on your capabilities and achievements. This is the best style choice if you know the job you want and know you have the capabilities to do it. Once again, the style of resume you choose should clearly, quickly, and directly present your skills as they relate to the job you are seeking. Several examples of each type of resume described above can be found at the Career Services Office. |
